Dusting Ourselves Down

Dusting Ourselves Down

It’s been a tough first week for the World Cup team. Everyone realised the first two games were going to be extremely difficult and we sit here thousands of miles away disappointed.

I can tell you that the lads in that squad will be 10 times more upset than we are.

To be hammered once is tough to take for a professional sportsman but this morning’s second hard defeat will really have shattered some confidence.

England will have been desperate to put in a good performance in Wellington to take something forward to Monday’s game against Scotland which now becomes a total must-win game.

Fine, Tim Southee bowled very well and Brendon McCullum came out all guns blazing which is even easier to do when you’re only chasing 120 and the game is all but over.

The Scotland team will have watched what’s happened and, without playing, will have picked up some confidence from what’s happened to the England team.

There is no option but to dust ourselves off, practise hard on Sunday and somehow hit Monday with an air of authority, knowing that if we play well, we’re going to win the game.

I don’t know if Paul Collingwood knows the words to ‘Flower of Scotland’ but let’s hope we don’t give Scotland a chance to be singing it on Monday morning.
