Records Smashed In Brisbane

On the domestic front, it was great to see Mongoose unveil Marcus Trescothick on Tuesday 30 November as their new marquee player. Mongoose is a new and innovative bat manufacturer and I am sure it will be a great new partnership between them and one of England’s finest

England played their ‘get out of jail card free’ card this week when staring defeat in the face, ended up with a mammoth 500 and odd for 1 in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test in Brisbane.    So many records got broken in that innings that it is easy to see why everybody has hailed the saving of the game so much.  The stand out record is clearly Alastair Cook over-taking the legendary Sir Don Bradman with the highest Test score at The Gabba!

As the circus moves on to Adelaide, it is Ricky Ponting who has to come up with probably a new bowling attack and also he has lots of questions to answer on the mental toughness of his side.  To only take 1 wicket in the 2nd innings at The Gabba and see his side visibly wilt in the field, must be a very worrying and quite new experience for Ponting.  Gone are the days with a 200 lead going into a 2nd innings of a Test when he could roll out McGrath, Lee, Gillespie and Warne, and no matter how flat the wicket, the pressure on the batsman would undoubtedly have brought about an Aussie victory.

Let’s not get it wrong though the way Strauss and Cook, but Strauss in particular, came out second time round with the pressures of conceding a big 1st innings lead, set their stall out was fantastic.  Strauss over the past month or so has impressed me enormously.  When he speaks to the press it is with great assuredness, everything is measured and you can see the confidence in him.  I think this reflects the way things are in the camp and in particular the partnership he has with Andy Flower.

I am sure we will be looking at the same 11 again for the game in Adelaide, the bowlers will have had their feet up for nearly a week and it is for Ricky and his boys to answer the critics and come out fighting.  Rest assured Ponting and his men will be up for the fight!
